The company has grown significantly over the past 5 years and is looking for an experienced candidate to head up the finance and risk functions.

Overview of the role

As part of the LifeCheq Team, you will be responsible for the management/coaching of the finance team and risk function in the business and will report to the CEO.  The role comprises both operational and strategic finance components. The current focus of the role is on the operational aspects.

There are resources in the company that will help you build and automate processes, but being successful in this role will also require you to be able to develop, prototype and drive your own processes.


Finance & Accounting

  • Oversee operations of the finance department, set goals and objectives, and design a framework for these to be met

  • Build and manage the treasury function in the business.  This includes the financial can cash flow forecasting as well as the investments of surplus assets.

  • Responsible for all financial reporting.  Ensure that there are robust processes in place to produce the correct metrics on a monthly and a weekly basis to all stakeholders including management, the board and shareholders.

  • Overall responsibility for expense management across the company

  • Manage the debtors and creditors book

  • Responsible for tax, VAT and financial account submissions to SARS and CIPC

  • Supervise the creation of the the monthly accounts, reconciliations and other statements


  • Ensure the compliance function operates efficiently in the business

  • Manage the relationship with the external compliance officer

  • Manage the annual compliance audit

  • Ensure all parts of the business are adequately insured

  • Produce the annual risk management plan and execute on the initiatives therein


  • Manage the staff in the finance team and ensure that they are coached and mentored

  • Work with the business unit heads to ensure budgets are met

  • Work with the company secretary to ensure all regulatory requirements are met

  • Responsible for the company audit


  • Manage the preparation of the annual company budget with the executive team

  • Drive and manage key projects across the company that touch on legal, tax and accounting implications 

  • Maintain an up to date, accurate and easily consumable view of the company’s current and projected financial position for the board and the executive team

  • Build and analyse the business case for new services that the business plans to launch

  • Work with the executive team to maintain the medium term business plan

  • Develop and implement accounting policies as the business grows


  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders

  • Able to build, test and prototype processes without requiring a software development resource

  • Analysis, presentation and communication.  Able to analyse company metrics, produce reports and make recommendations to the board and upper management

  • Extremely high attention to detail

  • Comfortable with technology and online services such as Zapier, Trello and GoogleSheets

  • Able to manage, supervise and lead employees

  • Ability to identify opportunities to improve business performance

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Qualified chartered accountant

  • 7+ years of experience as a financial manager and responsible for a finance team (or similar)

  • 5+ years experience in financial services 

  • 3 years experience managing staff

  • A track record for designing and implementing new finance controls or processes

  • Proficient in Word and Excel / Google sheets

  • Familiar with Xero

  • Sound knowledge of IFRS, tax and the Companies Act.

  • Advantageous, but not required

    • RE5 and or RE1

    • Proficiency in automation tools like Trello and Zapier
